Dazzle camouflage, used primarily in World War I and World War II, sought to confuse and mislead, rather than conceal. It was used on warships and planes, large structures usually set against a consistent and relatively flat background (the ocean or the sky). Rather than attempting to hide the vessels within their surroundings, designers suggested to the British and United States militaries to go in the opposite direction. Some designs sought to conceal the speed of the ship, while others focused on concealing the ship’s direction of movement. High contrast and bright colors characterize this aesthetic.
The word “dazzle” means to temporarily blind or confuse someone’s vision. I don’t know if I believe in the virtue of authentic self-expression. Maybe I want to lie about who I am. Maybe I want to deceive and confuse. I am a beautiful great ship and I don’t want anyone to know my heading. I don’t want anyone to lock onto my coordinates or predict my movements. I will dazzle those who must be dazzled, and only the dedicated sailors who maintain and care for me will understand my tangled knotty insides.
